Your Questions, Answered
Details that help you understand the model before deciding whether it is a fit
Is Nerds On Site a job, a franchise, or an independent contractor opportunity?
Nerds On Site works with eNerds who are independent contractors. This is an opportunity to build your own IT business with access to the Nerds On Site brand, systems, team, and support network. It is not an employment position or a franchise. Canada, the United States, and South Africa all use the independent contractor model. eNerds operate independently while being able to draw on software and hardware specialists, group buying power, shared Client business intelligence, and a team across multiple continents when serving Clients.
What does Nerds On Site provide to eNerds?
eNerds can leverage an established brand, the proprietary IAAN backend platform, operational support, Client Centre and help desk capabilities, proven IT and cybersecurity solutions, group buying power, shared Client business intelligence, and access to specialists worldwide. That includes software and hardware expertise across cloud, security, wireless, development, networking, and more when a Client need calls for additional skills. This lets an eNerd bring a broader team and set of capabilities to a small or medium-sized business Client while remaining the local relationship owner.
How is the Nerds On Site team structured?
Nerds On Site operates as a flat organization: a nerd is a nerd is a nerd. Clients are at the top of the organizational chart, followed by the primary Nerd who serves as their primary contact, then the local POD Leader or Leaders, with company leadership at the bottom. Each layer exists to support the one above it.
What is IAAN, the Nerds On Site backend platform?
IAAN is the proprietary backend platform that supports the wider Nerds On Site team and continues to evolve as the network's needs change. eNerd feedback helps inform feature requests and ongoing improvements, so the people using IAAN have a voice in its development.
Does Nerds On Site provide managed IT services?
Yes. Nerds On Site has served small and medium businesses since the mid-1990s and provided ongoing monthly Client contracts even before the term "managed services" became common. eNerds can leverage elements of the Nerds On Site Managed Service Provider (MSP) stack at cost and bundle them with their own local service delivery to provide a complete managed IT package to each Client. A Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) platform connected to the core help desk team, server management team, security solutions, and experienced specialists gives eNerds the capability to attract and win managed-services Clients from the start. The eNerd builds the right package for the Client and applies a markup to the MSP stack elements.
Who is responsible for errors and omissions insurance?
Nerds On Site covers errors and omissions insurance, and that coverage extends to eNerds. This is one of the shared operating costs included in the Nerds On Site model.
Do I need to buy or drive a NerdMobile in order to become an eNerd?
No. A vehicle is not required in every location, and some eNerds in larger cities use public transit. There are a number of approved NerdMobile options that can be purchased new or used. Many eNerds choose an approved branded NerdMobile because of the visibility it provides. To qualify for the 13-percentage-point marketing premium, an eNerd must purchase or lease an approved vehicle and operate it as a branded NerdMobile, bringing the eNerd share from 37% to 50%. Nerds On Site covers the cost of approved decals and application but does not sell or lease vehicles to eNerds - those who choose a vehicle arrange their own purchase or lease.
Are branded shirts and business cards required?
eNerds wear Nerds On Site branded shirts when working with Nerds On Site Clients. The first shirt and first order of business cards are included in onboarding. As independent contractors, eNerds may purchase additional items as their business needs grow.
How do eNerds build their Client base?
eNerds are free to leverage the Nerds On Site brand, team, solutions, systems, and expertise to build their own businesses. Incoming Client requests, known within Nerds On Site as seeds (new Client leads), are one source of opportunity, but they are not the only path. Local relationship-building and referral networks are important, and structured networking groups such as Business Network International (BNI) have proven very successful for eNerds. Nerds On Site pays for the first year of BNI membership for new eNerds.
How are new Client requests distributed?
Every eNerd has the same opportunity to take seeds (new Client leads) that come into their area. From there, the Client's needs and the skills required help determine who is best positioned to provide service. More complex work may involve a more experienced eNerd or additional specialists so the Client receives the right expertise. Local leaders and more established eNerds may also pass along Client relationships as they grow their businesses and focus on the types of Clients that best fit their evolving goals.
Why does Nerds On Site sometimes use Field Nation?
Nerds On Site has its own eNerd network. Field Nation may be used when a Client needs onsite service in an area without a local eNerd and the issue cannot be resolved remotely. In those situations, Nerds On Site selects highly rated contractors to help extend onsite coverage.
What fees are involved?
The ongoing license fee is $99 per month in Canada and the United States, and R1000 per month in South Africa, along with a revenue-sharing arrangement for services and product markup. Implemented following the COVID-19 disruption, this monthly approach replaced the initial licensing fees used in the past, reducing the cost to get started. The license provides ongoing access to the team, tools, the proprietary IAAN backend platform, and support that eNerds use to serve and grow their Clients.
How does revenue sharing work?
The base eNerd share is 37%. An eNerd who purchases or leases an approved vehicle and operates it as a qualifying branded NerdMobile receives a 13-percentage-point marketing premium, bringing the share to 50%. Simply driving an approved vehicle does not qualify. Additional monthly performance bonuses and qualifying managed-service Client relationships can increase an eNerd's share to as much as 65% of service revenue and product markup. Nerds On Site also covers numerous shared operating costs, including errors and omissions insurance, administrative support, Client Centre costs, merchant fees, the proprietary IAAN backend platform, and collaboration tools.
When is an eNerd paid?
An eNerd is paid the week following the completion of the work, provided the Client has paid the invoice.
